Shareholder statistics first half of 2026
Shareholder wealth reaches new record level
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2026-08-27 8.00
Despite continued uncertainty in the rest of the world, the stock market continued to perform strongly in the first half of 2026. The rise lifted the shareholder wealth above the previous record level, which was set at the end of 2021.
Developments in the first half of 2026 in brief
- In total, the wealth of shares listed on the Swedish marketplace increased by 5.3 percent in the first half of 2026 and amounted to SEK 13,516 billion at the end of June 2026.
- Women's median and average portfolios are increasing at a faster rate than men's.
- The 5 percent with the highest shareholder wealth own 65 percent of the total shareholder wealth among households.
During the first half of the year, the share assets of companies listed on the Swedish marketplace increased by SEK 680 billion, which corresponds to an increase of 5.3 percent. During the same period, the OMX Affärsvärlden general index increased by 5.4 percent. This surpassed the previous record level from the end of 2021. At the end of 2026, the total shareholder wealth landed at SEK 13,516 billion, which corresponds to an increase of 0.25 percent since the end of 2021.
– The stock market continues to show strength despite geopolitical tensions. After a substantial decline of 31 percent in the first half of 2022, the shareholder wealth has developed strongly and is setting a new record level despite war and geopolitical uncertainty in the world around us, says Jonas Agné, economist at Statistics Sweden.
Record level of total shareholder wealth
The shareholder wealth has increased for three consecutive half-years
Women's median portfolio continues to increase more than men's
At the end of the first half of 2026, the median portfolio for women remained higher than men's. This trend began at the end of 2022, when women's median portfolio exceeded men's for the first time, and has continued since then.
At the end of June 2026, women's median portfolio was worth SEK 116,000, while men's was worth SEK 81,000.
Women's median portfolios are increasing at a faster rate than men's
If you instead examine the average portfolio among women and men, the picture looks different. After the first half of 2026, the average portfolio value for women is SEK 1,332,000, while the average portfolio value for men is SEK 1,406,000. This means that the average portfolio value of men is SEK 74,000 higher than that of women. However, the difference is narrowing and the average portfolio value of women is approaching that of men.
Women's average portfolios are smaller but increasing at a faster rate than men's
The spread in size of individual stock portfolios is large among women and men. The average is significantly larger than the median because individuals with large stock portfolios have a large impact on the average. At the end of June 2026, the 5 percent of the persons with the largest shareholder wealth together owned 65 percent of households' total shareholder wealth. Of these, 68 percent were men and 32 percent were women.
Definitions and explanations
Information on final owners is not available for nominee-registered ownership through Swedish nominees if the holding is less than 501 shares in a company. Because of this, these holdings are not included when households’ shareholdings are broken down by income and age. To address this, the difference between the number of shares issued and the number of securities with a known final-owner is distributed between the household sector and non-profit institutions serving households. At the end of June 2026, the imputed share in the household sector amounted to 15 percent of the total market value.
Information foreign managers end customers is not available, as these are not included in the public register of shareholders.
Swedish marketplaces refer to OMX Stockholm, Spotlight Stock Market, NGM and First North. Unlisted classes of shares in listed companies are also included. Shares in foreign companies listed on the aforementioned marketplaces are included in the statistics from the year 2000 onwards.
