Incomes increased more for women than for men

Earned incomes are higher for men than for women. However, earned incomes have increased more among women than among men in the 2000s. In 1999, the median income for women was 72 percent of men’s median income; in 2018, this share had increased to 77 percent.

Earned income has increased more for women than for men in the 2000s. Disregarding inflation, women’s income increased by 39 percent, while men’s income increased by 32 percent in the period from 2000 to 2018. Women’s incomes as a share of men’s incomes was nearly 77 percent in 2018, compared with 72 percent in 1999.

Largest relative increase in income for women in Bjurholm

Women’s incomes have gained on men’s incomes in 268 out of 290 municipalities in Sweden. The largest relative change was recorded in Bjurholm municipality, where women’s incomes increased by 44 percent, compared with 25 percent for men’s incomes. In 10 municipalities, incomes for women increased by more than 15 percentage points than for men.

In 22 municipalities, incomes have increased more for men than for women in the 2000s. This group includes seven municipalities in Norrbotten County, including Kiruna and Gällivare, where men have had an excellent income development due to the mining industry. In six municipalities in Stockholm County, men have had a better income development than women. In these municipalities, the income level is relatively low and women’s incomes increased by less than 30 percent.

Definitions and explanations

All information about the 2018 income year is preliminary. Final information will be published in January 2020. The statistics refers to persons aged 20 years or older who were registered in the population on 31 December of each year.

Earned income consists of income from employment and income from business. In addition to income from salary, income from employment includes mainly pension, sickness benefit, parental allowance, sick leave compensation, activity compensation, and unemployment benefits.
