New construction of dwellings in the first half of 2022

According to preliminary figures, construction of roughly 31 050 dwellings began in the first six months of 2022. This is a decrease of about 11 percent compared with the same period in 2021, when the construction of 34 826 dwellings was started.

In the first half of 2021, construction of approximately 23 950 dwellings was started in multi-dwelling buildings, which is 14 percent less than in the same period in 2021. Preliminarily, about 60 percent of the dwellings started in 2022 were rented dwellings.

In one-to-two dwelling buildings, construction of 7 100 dwellings was started, which is 2 percent more than in the same period in 2021.

In addition, conversion of multi-dwelling buildings resulted in 1 600 dwellings in the first half of 2022, compared with 1 710 dwellings in the corresponding period in 2021.

The 2022 figures on new construction have been adjusted upwards by 12 percent, which was the time lag in the corresponding period last year. The 2022 figures on conversion have been adjusted upwards by 53 percent.

Definitions and explanations

Dwellings refers to a unit intended fully or to a significant extent for residential use, regardless of the type of building in which it is located. Therefore, residences in one- or two-dwelling buildings are defined as dwellings.

One- or two-dwelling buildings refers to a detached one- or two-dwelling building, as well as semi-detached, terraced and linked buildings (excluding second homes).

Multi-dwelling buildings refers to buildings with three or more dwellings, including balcony-access buildings.

Conversion refers to the difference between the number of dwellings added and the number eliminated in conversions or altered use.
