Construction rate decreased in the first quarter of 2022

Preliminary figures show that construction of roughly 14 100 dwellings was started in new buildings during the first quarter of 2022. This is 13 percent down than in the same period last year when construction of 16 242 dwellings was started.

Approximately 11 050 of new dwellings were located in multi-dwelling buildings, which is 15 percent less than in same period a year ago. Among one- or two-dwelling buildings the rate of construction decreased compared to the same period in 2021; construction of 3 050 dwellings was started in the first quarter 2021, which is about fem percent less than a year ago.

In addition, conversion of multi-dwelling buildings was begun in 1 050 dwellings in the first quarter of 2022, compared with 700 dwellings in the corresponding period in 2021.

The 2022 figures on new construction have been adjusted upwards by 3 percent, which is the average delay in the corresponding period in recent years. The 2022 figures on conversion have been adjusted upwards by 64 percent.

Definitions and explanations

Dwellings refers to a unit intended fully or to a significant extent for residential use, regardless of the type of building in which it is located. Therefore, residences in one- or two-dwelling buildings are defined as dwellings.

One- or two-dwelling buildings refers to a detached one- or two-dwelling building, as well as semi-detached, terraced and linked buildings (excluding second homes).

Multi-dwelling buildings refers to buildings with three or more dwellings, including balcony-access buildings.

Conversion refers to the difference between the number of dwellings added and the number eliminated in conversions or altered use.
