Overlap between formal protection and the other forms of forest land is estimated and excluded based on a hierarchy, starting with formally protected forest land. The statistics do not show overlap between voluntary set-asides and other types. Overlap may exist but has not been studied thoroughly enough to be presented.

The total area of forest land has been retrieved from the Swedish National Forest Inventory. It is used for calculating the proportion of voluntary set-asides, consideration patches, and unproductive forest land. The proportion of formal protection and compensated areas under the Forestry Act is calculated using total areas according to Swedish data on land cover mapping (NMD).

The area of consideration patches are preliminary estimates based on the most recent definitive three-year average value in 2022/2023.

Unproductive forest land refers to the Swedish National forest Inventory’s five-year average value for the period 2021 to 2025, in which 2023 is the middle year. Areas on productive forest land cannot occur, according to the definition of unproductive forest land.
