Number of employed persons continues to increase

The number of employed persons increased by 93 000 between April 2018 and April 2019. The unemployment rate decreased by 0.6 percentage points to 6.2 percent. The number of hours worked increased by 1.9 percent, calendar adjusted. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of employed persons and in the employment rate. The number of unemployed persons decreased and the unemployment rate decreased to 6.2 percent.

Labour Force Surveys

In April 2019, there were 5 136 000 employed persons aged 15-74, not seasonally adjusted, which is an increase of 93 000 compared with April 2018. The number of employed men increased by 74 000 to 2 701 000, and the number of employed women was 2 435 000. The employment rate increased by 0.8 percentage points to 68.5 percent. Among men the employment rate increased by 1.4 percentage points to 70.8 percent and among women the employment rate amounted to 66.1 percent. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of employed persons and in the employment rate compared with recent months. In April 2019, there were 5 171 000 employed persons, which corresponds to an employment rate of 68.9 percent.

The number of employees aged 15-74 increased by 80 000 to 4 639 000 in April 2019, compared with April 2018, not seasonally adjusted. Among men, the number of employees increased by 60 000 to 2 347 000 and among women the number of employees was 2 292 000. The number of permanent employees increased by 71 000 to 3 943 000 in the same period. Among men, the number of permanent employees increased by 43 000 to 2 037 000 and among women the number of permanent employees was 1 905 000. There were 697 000 temporary employees. Compared with nearby months, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of permanent employees and a minor change in the number of temporary employees.

On average, the number of hours worked in April 2019 amounted to 160.0 million per week, not seasonally adjusted, an increase of 1.9 percent in calendar adjusted figures compared with April 2018. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of hours worked per week compared with recent months. On average, the number of hours worked amounted to 158.3 million per week in April 2019.

In April 2019, there were 339 000 unemployed persons aged 15-74, not seasonally adjusted. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent, a decrease of 0.6 percentage points compared with April 2018. There were 156 000 unemployed women and 183 000 unemployed men. The unemployment rate was 6.0 percent among women and 6.3 among men. Among young persons aged 15-24 there were 111 000 unemployed persons, of whom 76 000 were full-time students. The unemployment rate among young people was 19.0 percent. Among persons aged 15-74, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows decreases in both the number of unemployed persons and the unemployment rate compared with nearby months. There were 341 000 unemployed persons in April 2019, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent. Among young persons aged 15-24, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows decreases in both the number of unemployed persons and in the unemployment rate. There were 107 000 unemployed young persons, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 17.3 percent.
