Number of hours worked continued to increase

In January 2019, the number of employed persons increased by 96 000. The unemployment rate was 6.5 percent. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows that employment increased and the unemployment rate decreased to 6.2 percent. The number of hours worked amounted to 146.3 million per week, an increase of 2.6 percent, calendar adjusted.

Labour Force Surveys

In January 2019, there were 5 065 000 employed persons aged 15–74, not seasonally adjusted, which was an increase of 96 000 compared with January 2018. The number of employed men increased by 72 000 to 2 666 000 and the number of employed women was 2 400 000. The employment rate increased by 0.8 percentage points to 67.6 percent. Among men, the employment rate increased by 1.4 percentage points to 70.0 percent and among women, it amounted to 65.2 percent. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of employed persons and in the employment rate compared with recent months. In January 2019, there were 5 162 000 employed persons, which corresponds to an employment rate of 68.9 percent.

The number of employees aged 15–74 increased by 89 000 to 4 578 000 in January 2019, compared with January 2018, not seasonally adjusted. Among men, the number of employees increased by 68 000 to 2 323 000 and among women the number of employees was 2 255 000. The number of permanent employees increased by 87 000 to 3 883 000 in the same period. Among men, the number of permanent employees increased by 55 000 to 2 003 000 and among women the number of permanent employees was 1 880 000. There were 695 000 temporary employees. Compared with nearby months, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of both temporary employees and permanent employees.

On average, the number of hours worked in January 2019 amounted to 146.3 million per week, not seasonally adjusted, an increase of 2.6 percent in calendar adjusted figures. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of hours worked per week compared with recent months. On average, the number of hours worked amounted to 157.9 million per week in January 2019.

In January 2019, there were 350 000 unemployed persons aged 15–74, not seasonally adjusted. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.5 percent. There were 167 000 unemployed women and 183 000 unemployed men. The unemployment rate was 6.5 percent among women and 6.4 percent among men. Among young persons aged 15–24 there were 105 000 unemployed persons, of whom 67 000 were full-time students. The unemployment rate among young people was 18.4 percent. Among persons aged 15–74, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows decreases in both the number of unemployed persons and the unemployment rate compared with nearby months. There were 340 000 unemployed persons in January 2019, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent. Among young persons aged 15–24, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows decreases in both the number of unemployed persons and the unemployment rate. There were 105 000 unemployed young persons, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 16.9 percent.
