In July 2019 there were 5 239 000 employed persons. The unemployment rate was 6.9 percent, an increase of 0.9 percentage points compared with July 2018. The number of hours worked per week amounted to 109.0 million on average. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data indicates a decrease in the employment rate and an increase in the unemployment rate. The unemployment rate was 6.8 percent.

Labour Force Surveys

In July 2019, there were 5 239 000 employed persons aged 15─74, not seasonally adjusted. The number of employed men was 2 739 000, a decrease of 39 000 compared with July 2018. The number of employed women was 2 500 000. This was the third consecutive month in which the employment rate did not increase compared with the same month a year earlier. Prior to that, the number of employed persons had increased every month since September 2016.

The employment rate was 69.8 percent, a decrease of 1.0 percentage point compared with the same month a year earlier. Among men, the employment rate decreased by 1.6 percentage points to 71.7 percent. Among women, the employment rate was 67.8 percent. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data indicates a decrease in both the number of employed persons and the employment rate, compared with recent months. In July 2019, there were 5 121 000 employed persons, which corresponds to an employment rate of 68.2 percent.

There were 4 747 000 employees aged 15─74 in July 2019, not seasonally adjusted. The number of permanent employees was 3 934 000 in the same period, which is an increase of 60 000 persons compared with July 2018. Among men, the number of permanent employees was 2 031 000. Among women the number was 1 903 000, an increase of 38 000.

There were 814 000 temporary employees, a decrease of 90 000 compared with July 2018. Among men, there were 353 000 temporary employees, a decrease of 53 000. Among women the number of temporary employees was 461 000, a decrease of 38 000. Compared with nearby months, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of permanent employees and a decrease in the number of temporary employees.

On average, the number of hours worked in July 2019 amounted to 109.0 million per week, not seasonally adjusted. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data showed a decrease in the number of hours worked per week compared with recent months. On average, the number of hours worked amounted to 156.6 million per week in July 2019.

In July 2019, there were 390 000 unemployed persons aged 15─74, not seasonally adjusted, an increase of 50 000 compared with July 2018. The number of unemployed men increased by 29 000 to 202 000. There were 188 000 unemployed women. The unemployment rate was 6.9 percent, an increase of 0.9 percentage points compared with July 2018. The unemployment rate was 7.0 percent among women. Among men the unemployment rate increased by 1.0 percentage points to 6.9 percent. Among young persons aged 15─24 there were 110 000 unemployed persons, of whom 15 000 were full-time students. The unemployment rate among young people was 15.6 percent.

Among persons aged 15–74, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in both the number of unemployed persons and in the unemployment rate, compared with nearby months. There were 371 000 unemployed persons in July 2019, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.8 percent.

Among young persons aged 15─24, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows minor changes in the number of unemployed persons, and an increase in the unemployment rate. There were 108 000 unemployed young persons, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 18.2 percent.
