Strong labour market for young people

In July 2022, there were 5,405,000 employed people, not seasonally adjusted. This is an increase of 147,000 people compared to July 2021. The number of employed young people, aged 15–24, increased by 69,000 to 714,000. The average number of hours worked per week amounted to 95.6 million. The number of unemployed people amounted to 373,000, a decrease of 82,000. The unemployment rate was 6.4 percent, a decrease of 1.6 percentage points. The unemployment rate among young people decreased by 4.3 percentage points to 13.2 percent. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data indicates an increase in employment and a decrease in the unemployment rate which amounted to 7.4 percent.

Labour force

In July 2022, there were 5,777,000 people aged 15–74 in the labour force, not seasonally adjusted. The number of women in the labour force was 2,760,000 and the number of men was 3,017,000. The relative labour force participation rate was 76.7 percent. Among women it was 74.5 percent, and among men it was 78.8 percent.

Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows an increase in both the number and share of people in the labour force compared with nearby months. The number of people in the labour force amounted to 5,639,000, corresponding to a labour force participation rate of 74.8 percent.

Employment

In July 2022, there were 5,405,000 employed people aged 15–74, not seasonally adjusted. This is an increase of 147,000 compared to July 2021. There were 2,553,000 employed women, and the number of employed men increased by 98,000 to 2,852,000. The employment rate increased by 1.6 percentage points to 71.7 percent. Among women the employment rate was 68.9 percent, and among men the employment rate increased by 2.2 percentage points to 74.5 percent. Among young people aged 15 to 24, the number of employed people increased by 69,000 to 714,000. This corresponds to an employment rate of 61.0 percent, an increase of 4.7 percentage points. During the summer, employment generally increases as a result of young people entering the labor market.

Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in both the number and share of employed people compared with recent months. There were 5,223,000 employed people, corresponding to an employment rate of 69.2 percent. Both the number and proportion of employed young people increased compared with nearby months. There were 542,000 employed young people corresponding to an employment rate of 46.3 percent.

Employees

In July 2022, there were 4,930,000 employees, not seasonally adjusted. This is an increase of 174,000 compared with the corresponding month last year. Among women, there were 2,404,000 employees and among men, there were 2,526,000 employees, an increase of 132,000. There were 3,995,000 permanent employees, an increase of 156,000. Among women, there were 1,905,000 permanent employees and among men, the number of permanent employees increased by 112,000 to 2,090,000. There were 935,000 temporary employees. Among the temporary employees, 499,000 were women and 436,000 were men.

For seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the number of employees was 4,718,000. The corresponding figure for permanent employees was 3,960,000 and for temporary employees 758,000. Compared with nearby months, seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows an increase in the number of employees, permanent as well as temporary employees.

Hours worked

The average number of hours worked in July 2022 amounted to 95.6 million per week, not seasonally adjusted. During the summer months the number of hours worked per week is usually lower, mainly due to holidays.

According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data there was an increase in the average number of hours worked compared to nearby months, which amounted to 155.7 million per week.

Unemployment

In July 2022, there were 373,000 unemployed people aged 15–74 years, not seasonally adjusted. This is a decrease of 82,000 compared with July 2021. It corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.4 percent, a decrease of 1.6 percentage points. The number of unemployed women amounted to 208,000, this corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.5 percent. The number of unemployed men decreased by 63,000 to 165,000. The male unemployment rate was 5.5 percent, a decrease of 2.1 percentage points. There were 109,000 unemployed young people aged 15–24, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 13.2 percent, a decrease by 4.3 percentage points.

Among people aged 15–74 years, seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows a decrease in both the number and share of unemployed people compared to nearby months. In July 2022 there were 416,000 unemployed people, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.4 percent. Among young people aged 15–24, it shows a decrease in both the number and share of unemployed people compared to nearby months. The number of unemployed young people amounted to 135,000, corresponding to an unemployment rate of 19.9 percent.

Unused labour supply

Unemployed people, underemployed people and latent job seekers together comprise the unused labour supply. In July 2022, the unused labour supply averaged 21.8 million hours per week, which is 3.7 million hours less compared to July 2021. The unused labour supply corresponds to 545,000 full-time employments with 40-hour work weeks.

There were 314,000 underemployed people in July 2022, of which 151,000 were women and 163,000 were men. The number of latent job seekers was 240,000. Among the latent job seekers, 100,000 were women and 140,000 were men.
