No increase in employment

In June 2019 there were 5 227 000 employed persons and the unemployment rate was 7.6 percent. The number of hours worked per week amounted to 154.7 million on average. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data indicates a decrease in the employment rate and an increase of the unemployment rate. The unemployment rate was 6.3 percent.

Labour Force Surveys

In June 2019, there were 5 227 000 employed persons aged 15–74, not seasonally adjusted. The number of employed men was 2 725 000, and the number of employed women was 2 503 000. It was the second month in a row that employment did not increase, compared with the same month previous year. Before that, the number of employed persons has increased every month since September 2016.

The employment rate was 69.6 percent. Among men, the employment rate was 71.3 percent and among women, it was 67.9 percent. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data indicates a minor change in the number of employed persons and a decrease in the employment rate compared with recent months. In June 2019, there were 5 150 000 employed persons, which corresponds to an employment rate of 68.6 percent.

The number of employees aged 15–74 was 4 745 000 in June 2019, not seasonally adjusted. Among men, the number was 2 376 000 and among women it was 2 368 000. The number of permanent employees amounted to 3 965 000 in the same period, which is an increase of 101 000 persons compared with June 2018. Among men, the number of permanent employees was 2 030 000, an increase by 62 000. Among women the number was 1 935 000, an increase by 39 000. There were 780 000 temporary employees, a decrease by 64 000. Among men, the number of temporary employees was 346 000, a decrease by 47 000. Among women the number of temporary employees amounted to 433 000. Compared with nearby months, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of permanent employees and a decrease in the number of temporary employees.

On average, the number of hours worked in June 2019 amounted to 154.7 million per week, not seasonally adjusted. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data showed minor changes in the number of hours worked per week compared with recent months. On average, the number of hours worked amounted to 157.2 million per week in June 2019.

In June 2019, there were 427 000 unemployed persons aged 15–74, not seasonally adjusted. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.6 percent. There were 200 000 unemployed women and 227 000 unemployed men. The unemployment rate was 7.4 percent among women and 7.7 percent among men. Among young persons aged 15–24 there were 164 000 unemployed persons, of whom 67 000 were full-time students, a decrease by 18 000. The unemployment rate among young people was 22.8 percent. Among persons aged 15–74, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in both the number of unemployed persons and in the unemployment rate, compared with nearby months. There were 349 000 unemployed persons in June 2019, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.3 percent. Among young persons aged 15–24, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows a decrease in the number of unemployed persons, and minor changes in the unemployment rate. There were 104 000 unemployed young persons, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 17.4 percent.
