Small steps towards a more even gender distribution

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2010-07-06 9.30

Today the latest edition of “Women and men in Sweden. Facts and figures” is being released. The statistics show a slow improvement within some areas.

An important gender equality issue is to make it possible to combine parenthood with gainful employment. One way to measure this is to look at the use of paid parental leave. Men are increasingly taking advantage of this, even if at a slow rate. Today 22 percent of the days are used by men.

The proportion of women who are professors is rising slowly. In 2008, 19 percent of all professors were women.

But still …

education on all levels is segregated by sex. Today only one in five girls and one in five boys graduate from a programme in upper secondary school with an even sex distribution.

sex segregation still exists on the labour market. Only a few occupations have an even sex distribution.

differences in pay among women and men are unchanged.

Furthermore ...

One in three employed women and one in ten employed men work part-time. Women's working time is influenced by the number of children and the age of the youngest child. Men's working time is not influenced by this.

In cases of assault in the home, the victim is most often a woman. While in cases of violence in public places the victim is most often a man. In most cases, the perpetrator is a man.

In companies listed on the stock market, 4 percent of women and 96 percent of men were chairpersons.
