One in ten families with children is a restructured family

In Sweden there are roughly 1.1 million families with children under age 18. Seven in ten are nuclear families, two in ten families have a single parent and one in ten is a restructured family. More than eight out of ten families have one or two children. The size of families differs among the municipalities of Sweden. The proportion of families with children with one child is highest in Solna while the proportion with at least four children is highest in Pajala.

In Sweden there are 1 129 575 families with children under age 18. Seven in ten families with children are nuclear families, where all the children belong to both parents. Slightly less than one in ten families is a restructured family. These are families where one or both parents have children from a previous relationship. Two in ten families have a single parent, usually a single mother.

The types of families vary among the country's municipalities. For instance, the proportion of nuclear families is lowest in Orsa, Munkfors and Filipstad (56 percent) and highest in Habo (82 percent) while the proportion of restructured families is highest in Hofors (17 percent) and lowest in Lomma, Danderyd, Täby, Vaxholm and Lidingö (6 percent).

It is most common that families consist of one or two children; this applies to more than eight in ten families. But there are families that are considerably larger; 95 families have 10 or more children.

The size of the families varies among municipalities. The proportion of families with one child varies between 31 percent in Danderyd and Lomma and 52 percent in Solna. In Solna, Vellinge and Lomma, 1 percent of the families have four or more children. The corresponding figure for Pajala is 12 percent.
