Broad decline in GRDP 2020

The Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) fell in almost all counties in 2020. Only two counties experienced growth.

Dalarna County recorded the largest decline in GRDP in volume terms, the drop was 5 percent compared to 2019. Västernorrland had the second largest fall at 4,3 percent, closely followed by Västra Götaland where the drop was 4,2 percent.

Two counties showed marginal growth in 2020, Blekinge and Jämtland.

Sweden’s GDP fell by 2.2 percent in volume terms in 2020. Stockholm and Vöstra Götaland counties contributed 64 percent of the total decline. These two counties accounted for 32 and 16 percent of the country’s GDP. The remaining counties contribution to the fall in GDP was less than 0,2 percentage points each.

Two counties above the national average of GRDP per capita

Stockholm county and Norrbotten county continued to stay over national average of GRDP per capita. The county with the highest GRDP per capita was Stockholm with a level of SEK 683 000. Norrbotten came second with SEK 516 000. Västra Götland fell just short of the national average at SEK 480 000. The national average GRDP per capita was SEK 487 000. The large differences in GRDP per capita between neighbouring counties can be explained, in part, by commuting patterns.

GRDP per employed person: Stockholm and Norrbotten remained above the national average

The national average GRDP per employed person was SEK 1 008 000 in 2020. As in the previous year, GRDP per employed person in Stockholm County and in Norrbotten County were above the national average; in Stockholm it was SEK 1 254 000 and in Norrbotten it was SEK 1 096 000 in current prices.

The national average of households´ disposable income per capita fell in most counties

The national average of households’ disposable income per capita was SEK 230 000 in 2020, which is a decline of 0.4 percent in current prices compared to 2019. Stockholm and Halland where the only counties above the national average while Blekinge reported the lowest disposable income but did show growth in 2020.

Fifteen counties experienced declining disposable income per capita. Norrbotten county had the highest growth with 1.4 percent. Blekinge country, Norrbotten county and Västernorrlands county all grew by 0.5 precentage. Disposable income in Stockholm county increased by 0.4 percent and disposable income in Västmanlands county was at the same level as in 2019.

Gross Fixed Capital Formation increased in Småland including the islands

Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) increased, in current prices, in five out of eight NUTS 2 regions (for more information on NUTS 2 regions, see the explanatory notes at the end of this document). The largest increase in GFCF was noted in Stockholm, where investments increased by SEK 19.4 billion compared with the previous year. Småland including the islands showed the largest growth of 6.8 percent in current prices. Sydsverige had the weakest development with a fall of 3.4 percent. That can be compared to the increase of 2.7 percent for the entire country.

Preliminary 2021 regional accounts

Preliminary estimates are based on preliminary data sources and will be revised next year when definitive calculations of the regional accounts are published. Preliminary estimates are compiled for GRDP, wages and salaries, average number of persons employed and households’ disposable income. Preliminary estimates for GFCF are not compiled.
