Share of students with a foreign background who achieve a passing grade in Swedish or Swedish as a Second Language in Year 9 of compulsory school.
The share of Year 9 students who achieve a passing grade in Swedish as a Second Language is around 70 percent, while the share who achieve a passing grade in Swedish is just under 90 percent. Statistics from the Swedish National Agency for Education show that the length of time spent in Sweden and parents’ educational attainment have a significant impact on academic outcomes for students with a foreign background.
Among students with a foreign background whose parents have pre-upper-secondary education, 71 percent achieved a passing grade in Swedish or Swedish as a Second Language in Year 9. The corresponding figure was 90 percent among students whose parents have post-secondary education.
