The largest population increase since 1861

In 2016, the number of people listed in Sweden’s population register increased by 144 136, and at the end of the year the population figure was 9 995 153.

The number of men in Sweden passed the five-million mark during the year and was 5 013 347 at the end of the year; there were 4 981 806 women and they are expected to pass the five-million mark in the course of this year. In 2015, for the first time, there were more men than women, and the development in 2016 shows that the number of men is increasing more than the number of women. The proportion of men and women in Sweden was 50.2 percent and 49.8 percent respectively.
