Adjusted compilation method for CPI, CPIF and HICP weights in 2022

The weights used to compile the CPI, CPIF, HICP and other related measures of consumer side inflation are updated by Statistics Sweden on an annual basis to take into account changes in the distribution of household expenditure between elementary products groups. The yearly update is introduced with the January publication.

Usually, the weight updates are based on information about the expenditure from two years ago. In 2021, however, Statistics Sweden deviated fom this praxis by taking consumption shifts during 2020 into account when compiling the weights. The reason was that 2019 expenditures were not judged to be representative for 2021 given the large shifts in consumption observed during the pandemic.

In 2022, Statistics Sweden will again make use of the adjusted method for the compilation of weights for the HICP, CPI and CPIF. Weights will thus be compiled using the same approach as last year. This means that consumption shifts during 2021 will be taken into account in the 2022 weights.
