Prices for electricity higher in July

Electricity prices increased on all markets between June and July. The monthly change was highest on the export market, in which prices increased by 40 percent. On the domestic and import market, electricity prices increased by 18.9 percent and 15.9 percent respectively. Crude oil prices decreased for the second consecutive month. The decrease in July was 4.9 percent, compared with a decrease of 3.1 percent in June.

Changes during the last month

The Producer Price Index increased by 0.3 percent between June and July 2019. In the same period, prices decreased on both the import and export market by 0.9 percent and 0.3 percent respectively. An appreciation of the Swedish krona contributed to lower prices on the import and export market. On the domestic market, prices increased by 1.1 percent. Domestic supply prices, that is, producer prices on the domestic market and import prices together, remained unchanged between June and July.

Changes during the last year

The Producer Price Index annual rate in July was 2.0 percent (2.5 percent in June). On the export and import market, the annual rate was 2.5 percent and 0.6 percent respectively. On the domestic market, the annual rate was 1.6 percent and on domestic supply it was 1.2 percent. The annual rate for electricity on the export market was -30.9 percent in July (-42.2 percent in June) as a result of unusually high prices on electricity in the summer months in 2018.

Changes in exchange rates

An appreciation or depreciation of the Swedish currency lowers or raises export and import prices in Swedish krona. According to Swedish Customs’ exchange rates, from June to July, the Swedish krona appreciated against the British pound by 1.8 percent, against the US dollar and the Norwegian krona by 0.9 percent, and against the euro and the Danish krona by 0.6 percent.

In the last year, the Swedish krona has weakened, mainly against the US dollar, by 7.2 percent, but also against the euro by 3.7 percent, against the Danish krona by 3.5 percent, against the British pound by 2.3 percent and against the Norwegian krona by 0.3 percent.
