Public sector – the largest financier

The Swedish economy produced activities in 2013 for almost SEK 940 billion. This is an increase of SEK 50 billion compared with the previous year.

The privately run enterprises produced activities for about SEK 156 billion of the total SEK 940 billion. The privately run enterprises were financed by the public sector to a degree of 72 percent. Organisations and foundations are large producers in this area. They produced activities for about SEK 29 billion, of which 61 percent was financed by public sector.

Large regional differences of purchased activities

On average for the entire country, municipalities and county councils bought activities for 11 percent of the total cost. There are large regional differences: Purchased activities in Stockholm County amounted to 20 percent, while in Kalmar and Norrbotten purchased activities only amounted to 4 percent.

1.2 million employees in health care, education and social services

In 2013 the number of employees in health care, education and social services was 1.2 million. This means that about 25 percent of all employees in Sweden work in health care, education or social services. Since 2000 the number of employees in this area has increased by 19 percent.

Strongest key ratios in health care

Of the three activities health care, education and social services the key ratios are strongest for enterprises in health care. For example, liquidity was 188 for enterprises in health care, and was between 132 and 140 in education and social services.

Definitions and explanations

Municipalities' purchase of activities refers to activities and contracting where there is a contract or agreement with another producer, for activities which the municipality would otherwise have conducted by themselves. County councils' purchase of activities is similarly defined.
