Sales increased in all food groups in 2018

In 2018, sales of food and beverages amounted to SEK 296 billion, which is an increase of 5.3 percent, SEK 15 billion, compared with 2017. This increase stemmed from a 3.1 percent increase in sales volume of and 2.1 percent in price increases on food and beverages during the year.

Sales increased in all groups within food and beverages in 2018. The largest increases were recorded in the categories mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices. These categories increased by 11.0 percent between 2017 and 2018 and total sales amounted to SEK 19.5 billion. The increase in fixed prices was 8.2 percent.

Sales of non-alcoholic beverages increased by 8.0 percent compared with 2017, largely due to increased consumption, as prices rose by 0.9 percent.

Sales per capita of candy amounted to SEK 2 289 in 2018. This corresponds to weekly per capita sales of SEK 44, an increase of SEK 2 per week compared with 2017. Candy sales were considerably higher than per capita sales of fruit, which amounted to SEK 30 per week. Per capita sales of fruit also increased, by SEK 1 per week.
