Net trade balance at SEK 4.7 billion in October

In October 2020, Swedish exports of goods amounted to SEK 128.1 billion, while imports of goods amounted to SEK 123.4 billion. As a result, the net trade balance was SEK 4.7 billion.
Foreign trade in goods resulted in a net trade surplus of SEK 4.7 billion in October 2020, according to preliminary calculations. In October 2019, there was a net trade deficit of SEK 3.9 billion.
The value of exports in October 2020 was SEK 128.1 billion, while imports were valued at SEK 123.4 billion. The corresponding values for October 2019 were SEK 137.0 billion for exports and SEK 140.9 billion for imports. Exports of goods have thus decreased by 6 percent in value, and imports decreased by 12 percent in value compared with October 2019. The number of weekdays in October 2020 was one less compared with October 2019.
Trade in goods with countries outside the EU resulted in a surplus of SEK 21.9 billion, while EU trade resulted in a deficit of SEK 17.2 billion. As from February 2020, the United Kingdom no longer forms part of the group EU Member States and is included, instead, in the group Non-EU Member States.
Seasonally adjusted, net trade showed a surplus of SEK 4.9 billion in October, compared with a surplus of SEK 4.7 billion in September. The corresponding figure for August was a surplus of SEK 4.6 billion.
Net trade (Jan – Oct 2020) surplus of SEK 54.4 billion
In this period, the value of exports of goods decreased by 7 percent, while the value of imports of goods decreased by 10 percent compared with the corresponding period a year ago. Exports were valued at SEK 1178.8 billion and imports were valued at SEK 1124.4 billion, resulting in a net trade surplus of SEK 54.4 billion for January – October 2020. The corresponding net trade balance for these months a year earlier was a surplus of SEK 14.9 billion.

Definitions and explanations
Last month’s import and export values in trade with the EU are estimates based on data provided by a large subset of companies that trade with the EU. Most (95 percent) of the deviation between these estimates and the subsequent outcome lies within the range of SEK -2 billion and SEK 1 billion for both imports and exports.
Import and export values for trade in goods with non-EU countries are based largely on data from Swedish Customs.
