Educational attainment of the population 2011:

Large cities attract the highly educated

Greater metropolitan municipalities and county seats have a higher percentage of highly educated persons than the national average. The majority of municipalities with the highest level of education are in Stockholm County. In total, 40 municipalities were above the national average of 24 percent.

In eight of the municipalities in Stockholm County, 30 percent or more of the population had at least three years post secondary education. Lund, Lomma, Uppsala, Umeå, Linköping, Göteborg, Mölndal and Knivsta also belong to this group.

The high level of education in the Stockholm area is largely because of a labour market with many workplaces within the areas of "financial operations and business services", "education and research" and "public administration". These areas have a high percentage of highly educated persons as well as a large supply of higher education institutions and a relatively young population that have a higher formal level of education than older persons.

The educational level is lower in most of the municipalities outside the metropolitan areas. With only a few exceptions, the smaller municipalities have a larger proportion with primary and lower secondary education only. These municipalities also have a smaller proportion of highly educated persons compared to the county seats in each county. In most counties the share of highly educated persons is significantly higher in the county seat compared to other municipalities in the given county.

Educational level among Swedish born and foreign born persons

Foreign born persons have a somewhat lower level of education than those who were born in Sweden. The difference with regard to post secondary education is small; 39 percent of Swedish born persons have post secondary education compared to 38 percent of foreign born persons. Among foreign born persons there is a higher percentage of those who only have primary and lower secondary education than among Swedish born persons. 20 percent of foreign born persons had a primary and lower secondary education compared to 12 percent of Swedish born persons.

A higher percentage of women have higher education, both among Swedish born and foreign born persons. Foreign born women have only primary and lower secondary education to a somewhat greater extent than foreign born men. The opposite applies to Swedish born persons, where it is more common that men only have primary and lower secondary education, 15 and 10 percent respectively.

The differences are considerable among the countries of origin and immigrant groups, largely because of the age structure and grounds for immigration.
