Complete table package

Statistics Sweden produces tailor-made statistical packages for the municipal and regional authorities, which consist of statistical tables and a number of PX-Web matrices. The packages are made to fill the needs for different planning purposes. As the planning process at local government level often calls for a more detailed geographical breakdown than that provided by the official statistics, Statistics Sweden has developed the Key-Code system. The Key-Code system (in Swedish "NYKO") is designed for generating statistics on sub-areas within a municipality.

The Key-Code system

Key-coding is defined as "dividing a municipality into an optional number of small areas". The real estate is the smallest component in the area breakdown. Real estates are aggregated to form the sub-areas designed by the municipal authority. Each estate has a real estate designation, and all individuals in the Total Population Register are linked to a real estate. This triple link between individual - property - area division furnishes the technical capability for reporting demographic statistics by sub-area. The real estate designation is the "key" that opens the door between area division and, in this case, the Population Register. For this reason the name "Key-Code system" was chosen.

The Key-Code system is hierarchical in structure and the smallest sub-areas formed from one or more real estates may be aggregated to form areas of growing size. In this way, the municipal authority will be able to obtain statistics reported at a level adapted to reflect the planning situation. At present, 286 of the 289 municipalities in Sweden are affiliated to the Key-Code system. These municipalities comprise about 90 000 Key-Code areas at the lowest area level.

Statistical package

The main statistical packages available for municipalities and others are:

  • BEFPAK presents tables with detailed demographic statistics covering age, sex, marital status, citizenship, country of birth, births, deaths and migration
  • INKOPAK covers the income situation of persons and families including different income measures and grants.
  • AMPAK is a package with statistics on employment and commuting
  • FASTPAK includes information about real estate, such as owner category and type of building.
  • BILPAK covers motor vehicles, especially passenger cars.

The "Statistical basis for population projections" contains tables designed for use by the municipal authorities when making population projections.

The statistical packages have been delivered mainly as tables in paper from since the start in the mid 70's, but today the statistics can also be downloaded from the Internet through web-database system called PX-Web. The PX-Web is a part of the PC-Axis "software family" developed by Statistics Sweden.
