Manufacturers of motor vehicles move up a gear

Enterprises in the manufacturing and wholesale of motor vehicles improved their operating profit in 2015. Increased sales of new vehicles combined with lower raw material costs contributed to the positive result. The entire Swedish business sector had an increased net turnover of 5 percent and an increased value added of 7 percent between 2014 and 2015.

The industry Sale of motor vehicles increased its net turnover by almost SEK 42 billion, or 12 percent, in 2015. This increase is partly due to a rise in new car sales which together with increased exports, has affected the motor vehicles manufacturing industry positively, resulting in an increase in net turnover of 18 percent. Operating profit increased by about SEK 17 billion.

Value added increased

The Swedish business sector developed positively in 2015. According to preliminary data, value added (contribution to the GDP) increased by 7 percent to SEK 2 300 billion, net turnover increased by 5 percent to SEK 7 700 billion and the number of employees increased by 2 percent to 2 700 000 employees compared with 2014.

Construction sector increased in 2015

The construction sector increased its net turnover by 11 percent. Employment in this sector rose by 4 percent. Growth in the industry sector and the service sector continued in 2015 and both sectors increased their net turnover by 5 percent. The number of employees in industrial enterprises was at the same level as last year, while in services enterprises the workforce increased by 2 percent.

Compared with 2008, the proportion of employees in the industrial sector dropped by 5 percentage points, while the proportion of employees in the services sector and in the construction sector increased by 4 percentage points and 1 percentage point respectively. Compared with 2008, the percentage of net sales in the industrial sector decreased by 3 percentage points, while it increased in construction and services, by 1 percentage point and 2 percentage points respectively.

Structural Business Statistics is the only survey based on annual accounts from all non-financial enterprises in Sweden. We also present data by industry (according to NACE Rev.2) and by sector in the databases.

Definitions and explanations

All information is reported in current prices. All comparisons in this statistical news have been made using final data for 2014.

Net turnover: net turnover excluding excise taxes and merchanting.

Employees: average number of employees, full-time: Two half-time employees are counted as one full-time employee.

Value added: actual production minus costs for purchased goods and services, although not salaries, payroll taxes and the costs of goods for resale (because only the trade margin for these is included in the production value).

Operating margin: operating profit/loss after depreciation in relation to net turnover in percent.

Net margin: profit/loss after financial items in relation to net turnover in percent.

Business sector: enterprises conducting business activities in Sweden regardless of legal form. Businesses with financial activities and housing cooperatives are not included in the Structural Business Statistics. Public administration activities are not included either.

Industrial sector: comprises NACE 05-33 according to NACE Rev2.

Construction sector: comprises NACE 41-43 according to NACE Rev2.

Services sector: comprises NACE 45-96 (excl. 64-66 and 84) according to NACE Rev2.
