Construction of dwellings decreased

Preliminary figures show that construction of roughly 14 450 dwellings was started in new buildings during the 1st quarter of 2018. This is a decrease of 13 percent compared with same period in 2017, when construction of 16 566 dwellings was started. This is the first time since 2012 that the number of dwellings for which construction started in multi-dwelling buildings decreased in the first quarter. Thirty percent fewer dwellings were started in the first quarter of 2012 compared with the first quarter of 2011.

During the first quarter of 2018, construction of approximately 3 100 dwellings was started in one- or two-dwelling buildings, down by 7 percent since the same period last year. In multi-dwelling buildings, construction of 11 350 dwellings was started, down by 14 percent compared with same period in 2017.

In addition, conversion of multi-dwelling buildings resulted in 650 dwellings started the first quarter of 2018, compared with 1 158 dwellings in the corresponding period in 2017.

The 2018 figures on new construction have been adjusted upwards by 14 percent, which is the average delay in the corresponding period in recent years. The 2018 figures for conversion have been adjusted upwards by 46 percent.

Definitions and explanations

A dwelling refers to a room or a number of rooms intended for private habitation.

One- or two-dwelling building refers to detached one- or two-dwelling buildings as well as semi-detached, row and linked buildings.

Multi-dwelling building refers to buildings with three or more apartments, including balcony access housing.

Conversion refers to the difference between dwellings added and removed through conversion or changes in usage of multi-dwelling buildings.
