Broad recovery in GRDP 2021

The Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) increased in almost all counties in 2021. Only one county experienced decline.
Kronoberg County recorded the largest increase in GRDP in volume terms, the increase was 11 percent compared to 2020. Norrbotten had the second largest increase at 8.9 percent, closely followed by Södermanland and Blekinge where the increases were 8.7 and 8.5 percent.
One county exhibited a decline in 2021, Gävleborg.
Sweden’s GDP increased by 6.1 percent in volume terms in 2021. Stockholm and Västra Götaland counties contributed to half of the total increase. These two counties accounted for 32 and 16 percent of the country’s GDP. The remaining counties contribution to the increase in GDP was less than 0.5 percentage points each.
Two counties above the national average of GRDP per capita
Stockholm county and Norrbotten County continued to stay above the national average of GRDP per capita. The county with the highest GRDP per capita was Stockholm with a level of SEK 729 000. Norrbotten followed with SEK 648 000. Västra Götland fell slightly below the national average, at SEK 517 000. The national average GRDP per capita was SEK 527 000. The large differences in GRDP per capita between neighboring counties can be explained, in part, by commuting patterns.
GRDP per employed person: Stockholm and Norrbotten remained above the national average
The national average GRDP per employed person was SEK 1 085 000 in 2021. In line with the previous year, GRDP per employed person in Stockholm County and Norrbotten County exceeded the national average. In Stockholm, it was SEK 1 331 000 and in Norrbotten, it was SEK 1 376 000 in current prices.
Disposable income per inhabitant increased in all counties in 2021
In 2021, the average disposable income per inhabitant in Sweden was SEK 242 000, which is an increase in current prices by 5.2 percent compared to 2020. Stockholm and Halland were the only counties that were above the national average. Stockholm was also the county that showed the highest disposable income per inhabitant in 2021, experiencing a 4.9 percent increase from the preceding year. The lowest disposable income per inhabitant in 2021 was in Blekinge County and Örebro County, but both counties showed an increase of 4.8 and 4.3 percent respectively compared to the previous year.
All counties had a positive development in disposable income per inhabitant compared to the pandemic year of 2020. The greatest development was reported in Jönköping County with an increase of 7.1 percent compared to 2020. The lowest development was in Västmanland County with 3.7 percent.
Gross Fixed Capital Formation increased in West Sweden
Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) increased, in current prices, in six out of eight NUTS 2 regions (for more information on NUTS 2 regions, see the explanatory notes at the end of this publication). The largest increase in GFCF was noted in Stockholm, where investments increased by SEK 70.1 billion compared with the previous year. West Sweden showed the largest growth and increased by 26.1 percent in current prices, which can be compared to the increase of 14.5 percent for the entire country. Eastern Central Sweden noted the biggest decrease and fell by 14.5 percent in current prices.
