Producer prices decreased in August 2017

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2017-09-26 9.30

Producer prices decreased by 0.8 percent between July and August. In the same period, prices decreased by 1.8 percent on the export market and by 1.3 percent on the import market, mainly due to an appreciation of the Swedish krona. Prices were unchanged on the domestic market.

Domestic supply, that is, producer prices on the domestic and import markets together, decreased by 0.7 percent from July to August.

Changes during the last month

A stronger krona has largely contributed to price declines on the import and export market. On the export market, lower prices for machinery and equipment contributed to the downturn. On the import market, several product groups contributed to the downturn.

Changes during the last year

In the last year, producer prices, that is producer prices on the domestic and export markets together, have increased by 3.8 percent. In the same period, prices on the import and the export market increased by 3.7 percent and by 3.0 percent, respectively. On the domestic market, prices increased by 4.3 percent, higher prices of petroleum products contribute here by 0.8 percentage points. Prices for domestic supply increased by 4.0 percent compared to the same period last year.

Changes in exchange rates from July to August

An appreciation or depreciation of the Swedish currency has a tendency to lower or raise export and import prices in Swedish kronor. According to Swedish Customs exchange rates, the Swedish krona appreciated against the US dollar by 5.7 percent, against the British pound by 2.5 percent, against the euro by 2.3 percent, against the Danish Krone by 2.2 percent and the Norwegian krone by 0.2 percent.

New product classification

Producer and Import Price Index is published according to both SPIN 2007 and SPIN 2015 in the statistical database. Both product classifications will be available during 2017 and 2018. In 2019, price indices will only be available according to SPIN 2015. Users are recommended to start using SPIN 2015 when it is available.
