Strong first quarter for foreign trade with goods

In the period January–March 2017 Swedish exports of goods increased 13 percent and imports of goods 14 percent in current prices compared with the same period last year.

In the period January–March 2017, the value of Swedish exports amounted to SEK 323 billion. This is an increase of 13 percent compared with the same period last year. At the same time, imports of goods were up 14 percent and amounted to SEK 322 billion. This resulted in a net trade surplus of SEK 1 billion. The net trade surplus for the same period in 2016 was SEK 3 billion.

Detailed information for January–March 2017

Exports of goods to the UK rose 17 percent

Sweden’s exports of goods to the EU 28 were up by 12 percent and imports from there were up by 13 percent compared with the same period last year. Both exports to and imports from the euro countries rose by 12 percent. Among the EU countries, exports to Germany increased by 13 percent, to Denmark by 9 percent and to the UK 17 percent. Imports from both Germany and Denmark rose by 15 percent and from the UK by 11 percent.

Exports to other European countries increased by 17 percent and imports from there increased by 30 percent. Exports to Norway were up 17 percent and imports from there were up by 16 percent. Exports to Russia were up by 31 percent and imports from there were up by 87 percent.

Exports to Asia rose by 21 percent and imports from there rose by 3 percent. Exports to China rose by 32 percent and imports from there rose by 1 percent.

Exports to the US remained the same, while imports from there decreased by 1 percent.

Exports of road vehicles up 18 percent

Exports of machinery and transport equipment increased by 8 percent. Within this product area, road vehicles increased by 18 percent. Exports of minerals were up 26 percent. Exports of wood and paper products rose by 8 percent and mineral fuels and electric current rose by 56 percent. Exports of chemicals and rubber products were up 14 percent. Within this product area, pharmaceutical products rose by 20 percent. Within the other products group, food, beverages and tobacco increased by 8 percent.

Imports of crude oil up 68 percent

Imports of machinery and transport equipment increased by 10 percent. Within this product area, road vehicles increased by 16 percent. Imports of minerals rose by 28 percent. Within this product area, iron and steel were up 36 percent. Imports of wood and paper products rose by 11 percent and chemicals and rubber products rose by 7 percent. Mineral fuels and electric current increased by 59 percent. Within this product area, crude oil was up 68 percent. Imports of other products increased by 7 percent.
