  • The population is growing despite continued low fertility rates

    At the end of 2025, 10 605 500 people were registered in Sweden. During the year, the population increased by 17 800 people. The population increase is explained both by more immigrants than emigrants and by the fact that more people were born than died during the year. In 2025, 97 500 children were born, which was the lowest number of births in 23 years.

  • Childbirth continues to decline in the first half of 2025

    A continued decrease in the number of children born, low immigration and high emigration have resulted in low population growth in the first half of 2025. At the end of 2025, 10 592 700 people were registered in Sweden, which was an increase of 5 000 people since the beginning of the year.

  • Sharp increase in the number of registered Ukrainian citizens during 2024

    At the end of 2024, 35 500 Ukrainian citizens were registered in Sweden, which is an increase of 28 900 people compared to 2023. However, the total number of foreign citizens registered in Sweden decreased by 12 300 people, or 1.5 percent compared to the previous year. Citizens of Syria were the group that decreased the most, 6 500 people.

  • Fertility rate continues to decline in 2024

    Sweden’s population was 10 587 700 inhabitants at the end of 2024, of which 49.7 percent were women and 50.3 percent were men. The population increased by 36 000 people in 2024, which corresponds to 0.3 percent compared to the previous year. The increase in the population is mainly explained by the fact that there were 29 700 more immigrations than emigrations, as well as 7 200 more births than deaths during the year.

  • Lowest population growth during the 2000s

    Sweden’s population increased by 1 600 inhabitants in the first half of 2024. This is the smallest population increase measured during the first six months of the year in the 2000s. On 30 June 2024, 10 553 300 people were registered in Sweden.
