  • Fewer receiving economic support in 2025

    After an increase in 2024, the number of full-year persons receiving economic support in the form of social assistance and benefits decreased in 2025. The greatest decrease in full-year persons was accounted for by sickness benefits, while unemployment benefits accounted for the largest increase.

  • Number of persons receiving economic support increased in 2024

    The number of full-year persons receiving economic support in the form of social assistance and benefits increased by 4.7 percent in 2024. The total number in 2024 was 748 075, which corresponds to 12.3 percent of the working age population. The greatest increase in full-year persons was accounted for by unemployment benefits, 35 percent higher than in 2023, while introduction benefit accounted for the largest decrease, 13 percent since 2023.

  • Number of persons receiving economic support continues to decrease

    The number of full-year persons receiving economic support in the form of social assistance and benefits decreased by 1.2 percent in 2023. The total number in 2023 was 701 953 people, the lowest level since the start of the survey, which corresponds to 11.8 percent of the working age population. The greatest decrease in full-year persons was accounted for by economic aid, 12.3 percent, while sickness benefits accounted for the largest increase, 4.8 percent since 2022.

  • Number of persons receiving economic support decreased

    The number of full-year persons receiving economic support in the form of social assistance and benefits decreased by 9.7 percent in 2022. The total number in 2022 was 708 249 people, which corresponds to 11.9 percent of the population of working age. This share was lowest in commuter municipalities close to a large town, at 9.3 percent, and highest in Low-commuter municipality close to a medium-sized town and commuter municipalities close to a small town, at 14.5 percent.

  • Number of persons receiving economic support decreased

    The number of full-year persons receiving economic support in the form of social assistance and benefits decreased by 1.1 percent in 2021. The total number in 2021 was 784 651 people, which corresponds to 13.3 percent of the population of working age. This share was lowest in commuter municipalities close to a large town, at 10.4 percent, and highest in rural municipalities and commuter municipalities close to a small town, at 15.9 percent.
