  • More men than women in small localities

    According to 2020 data, 273,000 people live in a small locality; that is, in a settlement area with 50–199 inhabitants. This corresponds to 3 percent of the Swedish population. The population of small localities is broken down into 52 percent men and 48 percent women.

  • Detached one- or two-dwelling houses most common in localities

    The most common type of dwelling in localities is detached one- or two-dwelling houses. They make up 72 percent of the total number of dwellings in localities. At the same time, more than half of the population of localities reside in multi-dwelling buildings.

  • Increasing proportion of people live in urban areas

    At the end of December in 2020, 88 percent of Sweden’s population lived in an urban area. This proportion is somewhat higher compared with Statistics Sweden’s most recent measurement, which referred to 2018. One-third of the country’s population lives in an urban area with more than 100 000 inhabitants. There are ten such localities in Sweden.

  • Densification in half of Sweden’s urban areas

    In 2019, more than half of Sweden’s just over 2000 statistical localities noted population increases. At the same time, the number of inhabitants declined in nearly 900 localities. In just under 50 localities, the number of inhabitants remained unchanged at the end of 2019.

  • There are 8.9 million inhabitants in urban areas

    At the end of 2018, 87 percent of Sweden’s population lived in an urban area. This share is unchanged from 2015. An urban area has at least 200 inhabitants, according to the Swedish definition, which means that urban areas comprise the largest cities, as well as small areas with just over 200 inhabitants.
