Rain led to unharvested areas in Norrland

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Board of Agriculture 2020-12-14 9.30

Autumn rain and early snowfall in Norrland led to difficulties in driving in the fields, and in many places it was not possible to harvest the crops. In Västernorrland County, more than one-fifth of the cereal areas were left unharvested. In Norrbotten County, 14 percent of the cereal area had to be left unharvested, according to regional harvest statistics for 2020.

Large areas in Jämtland County were also left unharvested and crops remained in the fields on 15 percent of the cereal area that was to be threshed. In Västerbotten County, 9 percent of the cereal area was left unharvested. Many areas that could be threshed in the Norrland counties noted large yields per hectare.

The total cereal production in Sweden as a whole is estimated at 5.96 million tonnes, which is 3 percent less than a year ago, but 9 percent more than the five-year average.
