Production of cereals, dried pulses and oilseeds 2025

Second largest harvest to date

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2025-12-12 8.00

This year's total grain harvest is estimated at 6.4 million tonnes, which together with the 1974 harvest is the second largest to date. The harvest is also 23 percent larger than the average for the previous five years and high yield levels can be observed in the whole country.

Record yield levels for cereal crops particularly in Götaland and Svealand

The yield per hectare of spring barley, the most common spring-sown cereal crop grown throughout Sweden, has been calculated at 5.7 tonnes at the national level which is the highest to date. The yield levels of spring barley are record-high in ten of the 21 counties, particularly in Götaland and Svealand. Jämtland County is the only county in which the yield level of spring barley is lower than the five-year average. Regarding winter wheat, which is the most sown cereal crop in Sweden, the yield level has been calculated at 7.6 tonnes at the national level. The yield levels of winter wheat are record-high in Östergötland and Värmland counties at 7.8 and 7.3 tonnes respectively.

The yield levels of spring barley are record-high in almost half of the counties

Record yield levels of winter rape in Mälardalen and southwest

The yield per hectare of winter rape, the most extensive oilseed crop, has been calculated at 3.8 tonnes at the national level which is the second highest to date. In Örebro, Uppsala, Södermanland, Västmanland, Halland and Västra Götaland counties, the yield levels are record-high. The yield level in Uppsala County is 37 percent higher than the five-year average and in Örebro County the yield level is 19 percent higher than the previous record in that county. The total harvest of rape- and turnip seeds is estimated at 401 100 tonnes, which is the second highest recorded.

High yield levels of peas and field beans in several counties

The yield per hectare of peas has been calculated at 3.7 tonnes at the national level, which is 27 percent higher than the five-year average. The yield levels in Örebro, Uppsala, Östergötland and Västra Götaland counties are record-high. However, in Dalarna County the yield level is 42 percent lower than the previous year, caused by unharvested areas. The yield per hectare of field beans has been calculated at 3.8 tonnes at the national level, which is the second highest to date. The yield levels in Västra Götaland, Östergötland, Halland and Skåne counties were between 21 and 31 percent higher than the five-year averages. The total harvest of peas is estimated at 84 900 tonnes and the total harvest of field beans is estimated at 56 600 tonnes.

A favourable harvest in most parts of the country

The weather during the previous autumn was favourable for the establishment of autumn-sown crops and the following spring, which was low in precipitation, contributed to most farmers having time to carry out their spring farming activities under good conditions. Despite low levels of precipitation, the cool weather combined with subsequent precipitation in late spring and early summer contributed to increased yield levels for both autumn-sown and spring-sown crops.

– It is now apparent that the harvest has been record-high in several places in the country, both in Götaland, Svealand and Norrland. However, the harvest in the middle parts of Norrland were negatively affected by heavy rainfall and wild animal damage, says Robert Almqvist, agronomist at SCB.

Statistical databases

Time series with the final harvest statistics are available in Statistics Sweden’s Statistical Database (www.scb.se) and the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s statistical database (www.jordbruksverket.se). The Swedish Board of Agriculture’s statistical database also contains preliminary harvest statistics. Time series on harvest statistics are available from 1913 onwards for some of the crops.
