Production of organic and non-organic farming, 2020

Record organic cereal production in 2020

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2021-06-23 9.30

The production of cereals approved for sale under organic labelling amounted to 421 200 tonnes in 2020. This is the largest production ever noted and corresponds to 7 percent of the total cereal production.

The organic cereal production in 2020 was 4 percent larger than in 2019, mainly due to an increase in the acreage of 9 percent. The oat acreage increased the most, and the total production of organically farmed oat approved for sale under organic labelling accounted for more than 17 percent of the total oat production in 2020.

Production of organically farmed oilseed crops also increased

The total production of rape and turnip rape approved for sale under organic labelling amounted to 15 900 tonnes in 2020. The major part of this production consisted of winter rape, at 14 600 tonnes, which is 14 percent more than in 2019. However, the production of organically farmed winter rape in 2020 did not quite reach the 2017 record level of 15 400 tonnes.

Total production of organically farmed peas decreased

Yields per hectare of organically farmed peas and field beans decreased in 2020, compared with the crop yields in 2019. The total production of organically farmed peas also decreased, while the total production of field beans remained on a level with 2019.

More than 7 percent of total table potato production was organically farmed

The total production of table potatoes approved for sale with organic labelling was estimated at 38 400 tonnes, which is on a level with 2019. The largest areas of organic farming of table potatoes were noted in Västra Götaland, Skåne, and Gotland counties. Just over 10 percent of the acreage of table potatoes was organically farmed in 2020.

Production levels in organic and non-organic farming

A more detailed report on this survey and the results for individual crops is published in Statistical Report JO0608, and is available on the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s website www.jordbruksverket.se under Statistics. Yields per hectare for various crops and in various regions are compared here between organic and non-organic farming.
