Production of organic and non-organic farming 2024
The production of organically farmed cereals decreased in 2024
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2025-06-18 8.00
The production of cereals approved for sale labelled as organic amounted to 242 900 tonnes in 2024. This was a 11 percent decrease compared to the production in 2023 and corresponds to 5 percent of the total cereal production.
Persistent rainy weather during late summer and autumn reduced the area and harvest levels of winter crops in large parts of the country. Low spring temperatures and late snowfalls delayed the establishment of spring crops. The total eco-approved grain harvest was 33 percent lower than the average for the last five years 2019-2023.
Lower yields in organic farming
The yield per hectare is lower in organic farming than in conventional cultivation. This is partly because chemical plant protection products and synthetically produced mineral fertilizers are not used in organic farming. As an example, it can be mentioned that the yield of spring barley in 2024 was 45 percent lower in organic farming in the plain districts in northern Götaland than in the corresponding conventional cultivation in the area.
Unusual and more low-yielding varieties also occur more often in organic farming than in conventional cultivation. In addition to spelt wheat, this also applies to, for example, einkorn wheat, Öland wheat, emmer and naked oats.
The yield per hectare of organically farmed peas increased
The yield per hectare of organically farmed peas increased by 40 percent compared with the yield in 2023. The total production of peas approved for sale with organic labelling was estimated at 6 300 tonnes in 2024 which is on par with 2023, the reason being that the area was reduced by 27 %.
Decreased area of organically farmed winter rape contributed to lower production
The area of organically cultivated winter rape decreased by 60 percent, compared to 2023 and reached 2 600 hectares, which is the lowest area in 10 years. For winter rape the total harvest that was converted and approved for sale with organic labelling decreased by 7 500 tonnes or 68 percent to 3 600 tonnes. The yield per hectare decreased by 20 percent.
Organically farmed table potatoes
The total production of table potatoes approved for sale with organic labelling was estimated at 26 600 tonnes, which was slightly lower than in 2023. About 6 percent of Sweden's total harvest of table potatoes was organically cultivated, compared to about 8 percent of the acreage in 2024.
Production levels in organic and non-organic farming
A more detailed report on this survey and results for indiviual crops is published in Statistical Report JO0608 and is available on the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s website www.jordbruksverket.se under Statistics. Yields per hectare between organic and non-organic farming are compared there for various crops and in various regions.

Previous publications
Data on yields and production from organic and non-organic farming have been collected since 2003. The results are presented in the Swedish Board of Agriculture database and in the Statistical Reports. The statistics are based on data from farmers who apply these two forms of farming in practice.
