Decline in Swedish Aquaculture

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2025-08-14 8.00

In 2024, the Swedish aquaculture production of fish for consumption decreased by approximately six percent compared to the previous year. The production of stocking fish declined even more – by a full 44 percent. Rainbow trout remains the most common species for both fish for consumption and stocking fish, although its production has also decreased.

Rainbow trout, a salmonid species, accounts for 7,700 tonnes, representing 85 percent of the production of fish for consumption. Despite its dominance, production has dropped by around 800 tonnes, which corresponds to a nine percent decrease compared to the previous year. Other common species in Swedish food fish farming include Arctic char and eel.

Sharp Decline in Stocking Fish Production

The total production of stocking fish and crayfish—used for release into natural waters or for farming—was 660 tonnes in 2024. This is a 44 percent decrease compared to 2023, when production reached 1,190 tonnes. Rainbow trout is also the most common species in stocking fish production, with 340 tonnes produced. Trout and salmon follow as important species for release and farming.

Fewer People Employed in Aquaculture

The number of people employed in aquaculture is estimated at 498, which is a five percent decrease since 2023. The industry is clearly male-dominated, with 80 percent men. Furthermore, statistics show that 50 percent of employees are in the 40–64 age group. Most work at facilities that farm fish in cages—219 people, corresponding to about 54 percent.

Operating Costs Remain Steady

Aquaculture operating costs totalled SEK 425 million in 2024, which is roughly the same level as the previous year. These costs include energy, maintenance, feed, and live aquaculture organisms. The largest single expense is feed, amounting to SEK 245 million, or 55 percent of total operating costs.

Previous publications

Official statistics on aquaculture have been produced yearly since 1983. The reference year 2024 is the fifth year which data on social and economic conditions formed part of the official statistics. The results are presented in the Swedish Board of Agriculture database and in statistical reports. These statistics on aquaculture are based on data from a questionnaire sent to all aquaculture enterprises in Sweden.
