Private sector profitability decreased during the second quarter of the year

The private sector profitability decreased during the second quarter of the year. Both the operating margin and the profit share of value added decreased compared to the corresponding quarter last year. Gross fixed capital formation increased and investments in inventories decreased, all measured in current prices.

What is Quarterly economic statistics?

Quarterly economic statistics is a statistical product describing the private sector’s economic activities. Quarterly economic statistics covers private sector profitability, value added, gross fixed capital formation and changes in inventories. The statistics is used as input to the quarterly GDP, and can also be used as individual business cycle indicators.

Summary of the second quarter

All percentage and nominal changes are compared to the corresponding quarter last year.

  • The total value added decreased by 0.1 percent in current prices and decreased by 1.0 percent in constant prices. The production volume increased by 1.4 percent and the volume of intermediate consumption increased by 2.7 percent.
  • The profit share of value added amounted to 29.4 percent, a decrease by 1.3 percentage points. Gross operating surplus decreased by 4.3 percent and compensation of employees increased by 1.7 percent, all in current prices.
  • The operating profit decreased by 7.2 percent. The operating margin amounted to 7.6 percent, a decrease by 0.8 percentage points.
  • Gross fixed capital formation increased by 10.1 percent in current prices. The largest positive contribution came from investments in buildings and constructions other than dwellings.
  • Total inventories decreased by 3.7 billion SEK compared to the last quarter. The speed of stockbuilding is hence accelerating, since the change in inventories decreased by 14.4 billion SEK during the corresponding quarter last year, all in constant prices.
