Net trade balance at SEK 2.7 billion in December

In December 2020, Swedish exports of goods amounted to SEK 119.7 billion, while imports of goods amounted to SEK 117.0 billion. As a result, the net trade balance was SEK 2.7 billion.
Foreign trade in goods resulted in a net trade surplus of SEK 2.7 billion in December 2020, according to preliminary calculations. In December 2019, there was a net trade deficit of SEK 2.9 billion.
The value of exports in December 2020 was SEK 119.7 billion, while imports were valued at SEK 117.0 billion. The corresponding values for December 2019 were SEK 116.9 billion for exports and SEK 119.8 billion for imports. Exports of goods thus increased by 2 percent in value, while imports decreased by 2 percent in value compared with December 2019. The number of weekdays in December 2020 was two more than in December 2019.
Trade in goods with countries outside the EU resulted in a surplus of SEK 20.7 billion, while EU trade resulted in a deficit of SEK 18.0 billion. As from February 2020, the United Kingdom no longer forms part of the group EU Member States and is included, instead, in the group Non-EU Member States.
Seasonally adjusted, net trade showed a surplus of SEK 5.2 billion in December, compared with a surplus of SEK 5.0 billion in November. The corresponding figure for October was a surplus of SEK 4.7 billion.
Net trade (Jan – Dec 2020) surplus of SEK 59.5 billion
In this period, the value of exports of goods decreased by 6 percent, and the value of imports of goods decreased by 9 percent compared with the corresponding period a year ago. Exports were valued at SEK 1427.3 billion and imports were valued at SEK 1367.8 billion, resulting in a net trade surplus of SEK 59.5 billion for January – December 2020. The corresponding net trade balance for these months a year earlier was a surplus of SEK 14.6 billion.

Definitions and explanations
Last month’s import and export values in trade with the EU are estimates based on data provided by a large subset of companies that trade with the EU. Most (95 percent) of the deviation between these estimates and the subsequent outcome lies within the range of SEK -2 billion and SEK 1 billion for both imports and exports.
Import and export values for trade in goods with non-EU countries are based largely on data from Swedish Customs.
