Business inventories increased in the first quarter of 2021

Swedish business inventories increased by SEK 11.5 billion in constant prices in the first quarter. This development corresponds to an increase of 2.2 percent in volume.
Total inventories in industry increased by SEK 1.5 billion in the first quarter, which corresponds to an increase of 0.6 percent in volume. Inventories in trade increased by SEK 10.0 billion in the first quarter, which corresponds to an increase of 3.7 percent in volume.
Industrial inventories increased
Inventories of finished goods and goods in progress increased by SEK 3.8 billion and inventories of input goods in total industry decreased by SEK 2.3 billion. This means that total inventories in industry increased by SEK 1.5 billion in the first quarter.
Since the previous publication, the development in total industrial inventories in the fourth quarter 2020 has been revised downwards by SEK 0.7 billion to a decrease of SEK 5.8 billion.
Trade inventories increased
Inventories in trade increased by SEK 10.0 billion in the first quarter. The largest increase was noted in wholesale trade, excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles, in which inventories increased by SEK 4.4 billion. Inventories in retail trade, excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles, increased by SEK 2.9 billion, and wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased by SEK 2.7 billion.
Total trade inventories in the fourth quarter 2020 have been revised upwards by SEK 0.6 billion to a decrease of SEK 7.0 billion.

The new survey Business inventories will replace the current surveys Inventories in trade and services and Industrial inventories in the next quarter. The results will be published on 17 August 2021 on Statistics Sweden’s website: www.scb.se/NV0123.
