Continued growth in the business economy 2016

Swedish enterprises continued to grow in 2016. Net turnover and the number of employees increased by 3.9 percent and value added by 3.5 percent. The number of employees increased most in the service enterprises, while the operating margin and the equity ratio developed more positively in the industrial sector than in the services sector. The accommodation, employment activities, architectural and engineering activities and veterinary activities progressed substantially in 2016.

In 2016, the Swedish business economy (excluding financial services) contributed SEK 2 390 billion to GDP and employed 2 820 000 persons (measured in full-time equivalents). Net turnover amounted to SEK 8 020 billion. Compared with 2015, the business economy’s contribution to GDP (value added) increased by 3.5 percent, while turnover and the number of employees increased by 3.9 percent. Growth in the service sector was 4.8 percent in net turnover and 5.0 percent in number of employees, compared with growth in the industrial sector of 2.3 percent in turnover and 1.7 percent in number of employees. The industrial sector’s operating margin increased by 1.1 percentage point to 7.6 percent, while the service sector’s net margin decreased by 0.6 percentage point to 6.7 percent. The industrial sector’s equity ratio increased by 1.5 percentage point to 46.9 percent and the service sector’s equity ratio increased marginally to 40.6 percent.

Rise for accommodation, employment activities and architectural and engineering activities

Industries that developed positively in 2016 included accommodation (NACE 55), employment activities (NACE 78), architectural and engineering activities (NACE 71) and veterinary activities (NACE 75). Accommodation increased its value added by 11.5 percent to SEK 20.9 billion and the number of employees increased by 8.5 percent to 35 800 persons. Employment activities, an industry which has grown strongly over a long period of time, continued to increase its valued added by almost 11 percent to SEK 40.7 billion. The number of employees increased by 12 percent to 81 000 persons. Growth in architectural and engineering activities was barely 11 percent in value added and amounted to SEK 76 billion, while the number of employees increased by 4 percent to 91 000 full-time equivalents. Veterinary activities is a small industry that increased its number of employees by 16 percent to 4 600 persons and increased value added by 10 percent to SEK 2.9 billion.

Water transport (NACE 50) and telecommunication enterprises (NACE 61) were two industries with weak development in 2016. Value added in water transportation enterprises decreased by 13 percent to SEK 7.3 billion and decreased employees by just over 2 percent to 10 200 persons. Value added in telecom enterprises decreased by almost 24 percent to SEK 36.8 billion, but at the same time, the number of employees increased by almost 2 percent to 24 300 persons.

Operating income, by operating costs and operating profit for the business economy 2016

Just over 93 percent of the total operating income (net turnover, work performed by the company for its own use, changes in stocks and other operating income) was used to cover different types of operating costs. Raw materials and goods for resale consumed 47 percent of the operating income. Other external costs, which includes rent, heating, lighting and purchased services (including agency workers) amounted to 22 percent of the operating income. The share of personnel costs was 19 percent, of which two thirds comprised wages and salaries. The operating profit amounted to 7 percent of total operating income, which is unchanged from 2015.

Definitions and explanations

All information is reported in current prices. All comparisons in this statistical news have been made with final data for 2015.

Net turnover: net turnover excluding excise duties.

Employees: Average number of employees, full-time: Two half-time employees are counted as one full-time employee.

Value added: Actual production minus costs for purchased goods and services, although not salaries, payroll taxes and the costs of goods for resale (because only the trade margin for these is included in the value added).

Operating profit: Operating profit after depreciation

Operating margin: Operating profit in relation to net turnover in percent.

Equity ratio: Adjusted equity in percent of the total liabilities and equity in percent. Adjusted equity equals equity plus 78 percent of the untaxed reserves.

Business economy: Enterprises conducting business activities in Sweden regardless of legal form. Businesses with financial activities and housing cooperatives are not included in the Structural Business Statistics. Public administration activities are not included either.

The industrial sector: NACE 01–43 according to NACE Rev. 2.

The services sector: NACE 45–96 (excl. 64–66 and 84) according to NACE Rev. 2.
