Civil society’s contribution to GDP was 3.1 percent

Total production in civil society was SEK 235 billion in 2016. This includes payments from public administration amounting to SEK 33 billion. Value added in civil society amounted to SEK 136 billion. Accordingly, the contribution of civil society to Sweden’s GDP was 3.1 percent in 2016.

Civil society also recognises subsidiaries to non-profit organisations as a subset. These contributed value added amounting to SEK 26 billion in 2016, compared with SEK 28 billion in 2015.

In 2016, civil society comprised 251 000 organisations in total, of which 95 000 were economically active. Sixty-three percent of all civil society organisations were legally classified as non-profit associations.

In 2016, there were 2 446 providers of services in education, health care and social services purchased by municipalities and county councils in civil society. This is a slight increase from 2015, when there were 2 418 organisations. Civil society organisations accounted for 21 percent of all private providers in education, health care and social services.

A distribution of total value added in civil society, SEK 136 billion, shows that Development and housing accounted for the largest proportion, SEK 47 billion. Sub-activity Housing dominated in this activity. Religion was the second largest activity, in which value added amounted to SEK 16 billion, followed by Education and research, and Recreation and culture.

There were roughly 190 000 gainfully employed persons in civil society in 2016, which corresponds to 3.9 percent of the total number of employees in Sweden. Women accounted for 60 percent of employees in civil society, which can be compared with the total proportion of women in the labour force in Sweden, 48 percent. Almost 71 000 gainfully employed persons in civil society, or 37 percent, worked in non-profit associations.
