Civil society’s contribution to GDP was 3.2 percent in 2017

Total production in civil society was SEK 251 billion in 2017. This includes SEK 37 billion in payments from public administration. Value added in civil society amounted to SEK 146 billion. This means that the contribution of civil society to Sweden’s GDP was 3.2 percent in 2017.

Civil society also recognises subsidiaries to non-profit organisations as a subset. These contributed SEK 30 billion in value added in 2017, compared with SEK 26 billion in 2016.

In 2017, civil society included 258 000 organisations in total, of which 100 000 were economically active. Sixty-three percent of all civil society organisations were legally classified as non-profit associations.

In 2017, there were 2 420 providers of services in education, health care and social services purchased by municipalities and county councils in civil society. This is a slight decrease from 2016, when there were 2 446 organisations. Civil society organisations accounted for 20 percent of all private providers in education, health care and social services.

A distribution of total value added in civil society, SEK 146 billion, shows that Development and housing accounted for the largest share, SEK 55 billion. The sub-activity Housing dominated in this activity. Religion was the second largest activity, in which value added amounted to SEK 17 billion, followed by education and research, and recreation and culture.

There were roughly 200 000 gainfully employed persons in civil society in 2017, which corresponds to 4.1 percent of the total number of employees in Sweden. Women accounted for 60 percent of employees in civil society, which can be compared with the total share of women in the labour force in Sweden, 48 percent. Almost 80 000 gainfully employed persons in civil society, which corresponds to 39 percent, worked in non-profit associations.
