In the general elections 2014 the electoral participation continued to increase, as well as the percentage of those who voted prior to election day.

85.8 percent of those entitled to vote in the election to the Riskdag also voted in the election. The corresponding percentages in the elections to County Councils and Municipal Councils were 82.4 and 82.8 percent. This means that the electoral participation continued to increase in all three election types in three consecutive elections.

The percentage of those entitled to vote who chose to vote prior to election day also increased. Nearly 2.7 million people voted prior to the election day, which corresponds to 42 percent of those who voted in the election to the Riksdag. The corresponding percentage in the election to the Riksdag in 2010 was 39 percent while in the 2006 election it was 32 percent.

Electoral participation in the Riksdag election increased in 279 of 290 municipalities compared to the 2006 election. The increase in electoral participation was largest in Årjäng by 5.3 percentage points and the decrease was largest in Södertälje with 1.6 percentage points.

Electoral participation in the election to the Riksdag was highest in Lomma municipality, where election participation was over 92.9 percent. The lowest electoral participation was in the municipality of Haparanda where 70.4 percent of those entitled chose to participate, which gives a difference of more than 22 percentage points between the highest and lowest participation rate.

If comparing even smaller geographical units such as electoral districts, event larger differences between the participation rates are noted. In the electoral district 137 Södra Kungsängen in Uppsala municipality the electoral participation was almost double the electoral participation in the district Östra Hermodsdal-Gullviksborg in Malmö municipality – 94.9 percent compared to 48.2 percent.

Election results

There were not any big differences between the aggregated election results for the three different election types that were held the same election day. The Social Democrats, the Moderates and the Sweden Democrats became the three biggest parties in the election to the Riksdag, County Council elections and Municipal Council elections. The Moderates and the Sweden Democrats had better results in the election to the Riksdag while the Social Democrats were strongest in the County Council elections. Looking more closely at the results of the Municipal Council election by municipality, the results of the different parties vary greatly.

The percentage of those who voted prior to the election day is based on the assumption that all those who voted prior to the election day voted in the election to the Riksdag.
