Educational attainment of the population 2014:

Upward inter-generational mobility in education less frequent

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2016-02-09 9.30

Statistics Sweden has monitored the change of inter-generational mobility over time for more than 30 years. During this period the education system has expanded and the level of educational attainment has increased substantially, especially among the parents of the current population aged 25–60.

The difference in educational attainment between two generations is the main factor explaining intergenerational education mobility.

In the youngest age-group only 5 percent have parents with attainment at ISCED 0–2 and 47 percent have at least one parent with post-secondary or higher level of attainment.

Differences in educational attainment between two generations mainly show the effects of the expansion of the education system. When the education system is expanding there is a high rate of upward mobility and a fairly low rate of downward mobility. When the expansion slows down and a high rate of parents have a tertiary level of educational attainment, the rate of upward mobility decreases, while downward mobility becomes more common.

If we do not take the difference in parental level of attainment into account, the rate of upward mobility has decreased from 55 percent in the oldest age group to 20 percent in the youngest.
