Labour Market Tendency Survey 2014:

Clear shortage of nurses and teachers

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2014-12-09 9.30

The lack of nurses continues, as well as the shortage of educated preschool teachers, special needs teachers, qualified recreation instructors, and teachers in mathematics and natural science. This year, employers also report a lack of educated dental nurses and teachers for the lower grades.

The employers report a shortage of newly graduated persons in a larger number of educational groups than last year. In 2013, there was a shortage of newly graduated persons in 18 out of 71 educational groups. Now the number is 29 out of 71. The shortage seems to increase especially within healthcare and education.

Teachers in short supply

In the educational area there is a continuing shortage of educated preschool teachers, qualified recreation instructors, special needs teachers, and teachers in mathematics and natural science. This applies to both newly graduated applicants and skilled applicants.

This year, employers also report a lack of teachers for the lower grades. Somewhat of a shortage also exists for compulsory school teachers in languages and social sciences.

Worse supply of dental nurses

A large majority of the employers report a continued shortage of nurses. It seems to be especially difficult to recruit first-level nurses and nurses in anaesthetic care, intensive care and surgical care.

Health care employers also assess a lack of educated dental nurses for the first time in many years. The supply has gradually worsened over the last four or five years; as a result there is now a shortage of both newly graduated and experienced dental nurses.

Scarce supply of industry trained

In the technology sector the supply of newly graduated persons is generally viewed as balanced. Mainly, employers report a shortage of those trained in industry on the upper secondary school level. The supply of applicants with this type of education has gradually become worse in recent years.

In the years to come, employers mainly assess that they will hire more architects, engineers (Bachelor of Science and Master of Science) in structural engineering as well as engineers (Master of Science) in electronics, computer and automation.

Good supply of social scientists

Within the social sciences area, the supply of newly graduated persons continues to be on the whole good or balanced. However, employers assess that there is a lack of experienced applicants with education in computer programming or system analysis, psychology and social studies.

Definitions and explanations

Labour Market Tendency Survey 2014 is a survey that provides information on the current labour market situation and its future prospects for the coming years for 71 educational programmes, of which 12 are upper secondary level and 59 are in higher education. Every year in the autumn, roughly 10 000 forms are sent to about 7 000 employers at selected workplaces. Among other things, questions are asked about the supply of applicants (Good supply/Balance/Shortage) and how the current educational programmes are foreseen in a one-year and a three-year perspective (Increase/No change/Decrease).
