Research and development in Sweden 2021

Basic research most common at higher education institutions in 2021

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2022-12-01 8.00

The Higher education sector’s expenditures for research and development (R&D) amounted to about 43 SEK billion in 2021. That was an increase of more than 453 SEK million compared to 2019 in fixed prices. The internal personnel in the Higher education sector performed R&D to about 20 000 full-time equivalents, of which women stood for 47 percent and men for 53 percent.

- For the first time we can present statistics on different types of R&D, and we can see that more or less equal parts of the expenditure on R&D are spent on basic research and applied research respectively, says Elin Stendahl, statistician at Statistics Sweden.

During 2021, the Higher education sector answered for around 23 percent of total R&D expenditure in Sweden. About 41 percent of R&D expenditure was spent on basic research. Applied research amounted to around 38 percent while 21 percent of expenditures went to experimental development.

The number of full-time equivalents in R&D decreased by about 900 compared to 2019, a development driven by the men. For women the decrease between the periods was small and not statistically significant. One reason behind the decrease is the move of the Swedish Institute of Space Physics from the Higher education sector to the Government sector between 2019 and 2021.
