Decreased expenditure for environmental protection in Swedish industry

Swedish industry decreased its environmental protection expenditure by SEK 1.1 billion or about 9 percent during 2013 compared to 2012. Both investments and current expenditure in environmental protection declined. Total environmental protection expenditure by Swedish industry amounted to nearly SEK 11.4 billion.
Environmental protection refers to activities that aim to prevent, reduce or eliminate pollution or other deterioration of the environment. Expenditure for industry is divided into either investments or current expenditure.
Total investments in environmental protection amounted to SEK 4.8 billion during 2013, a decrease of 11 percent compared to the previous year. Several industries contributed to the decrease. Compared to the previous year, the industry for electricity, gas and hot water supply declined more than SEK 400 million. Total investments in environmental protection by the industry amounted to 1.7 billion during 2013.
Current expenditure (e.g. maintenance, management and fees) amounted to SEK 6.5 billion, which is a decrease by 7.5 percent. The highest decrease was seen in the industry for food products, beverages and tobacco with a fall of about SEK 250 million.
Highest investment for ambient air and climate protection
Of the investments in environmental protection, 54 percent were devoted to protecting ambient air and the climate. Investments included the installation of filters and measures to replace fossil fuel sources with fuel sources that have a reduced climate impact. Investments to reduce the environmental impact in the water sector accounted for about 30 percent of the total environmental protection investments, while investments to reduce and manage waste accounted for 10 percent.

Investments in environmental protection are broken down into investments for emissions treatment that do not affect the process (e.g. filters and separate purification plants), and investments for the prevention of emissions involving investments in new or changed production processes Regular expenditure consist of expenditure for staff, energy, materials and supplies, such as for the operation and supervision of purification plants, for environmental administration work, environmental management and certification, as well as waste management. Payments to others who carry out these measures are also included.
