Environmental protection expenditure 2014:
Unchanged expenditure for environmental protection in Swedish industry
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2015-10-13 9.30
Swedish industry’s total environmental protection expenditure amounted to roughly SEK 11.3 billion during 2014. Expenditure for environmental protection was almost unchanged in 2014 compared to 2013. Total investments and current expenditure in environmental protection changed only slightly. However, larger changes occurred within certain industries.
Environmental protection refers to activities that aim to prevent, reduce or eliminate pollution or other deterioration of the environment. Expenditure for industry is divided into either investments or current expenditure.
The highest total expenditure for environmental protection in 2014 was shown by industries dealing with 1) electricity, gas and heating plants and 2) paper and paper products at SEK 2.2 and 1.8 billion respectively. The industry for food, beverages and tobacco increased the most by roughly SEK 234 million. The largest decrease was shown in the industry for steel and metal works at SEK 368 million.
Total investments in environmental protection amounted to SEK 4.9 billion. Several industries contributed to moderate changes.
Current expenditure (e.g. maintenance, management and fees) amounted to SEK 6.4 billion. The highest decrease was seen in the industry for steel and metal works with a drop of SEK 334 million. The industry for electricity, gas and heating plants together with water supply increased their current expenditure by SEK 269 million.
Highest investments for ambient air and climate protection
Of the investments in environmental protection more than half were devoted to protecting ambient air and the climate. Investments included the installation of filters and measures to replace fossil fuel sources with fuel sources that have a reduced climate impact. Investments to reduce the environmental impact in the water sector accounted for about 30 percent of the total environmental protection investments while investments to reduce and manage waste accounted for 9 percent.
Definitions and explanations
Environmental protection refers to activities that aim to prevent, reduce or eliminate pollution or other deterioration of the environment. Eurostat, the EU statistical organisation, has produced common international definitions for environmental protection and how the expenditure is to be calculated.
Investments in environmental protection are broken down into investments for emissions treatment that do not affect the process (e.g. filters and separate purification plants), and investments for the prevention of emissions involving investments in new or changed production processes. Regular expenditure consists of expenditure for staff, energy, materials and supplies, such as for the operation and supervision of purification plants, for environmental administration work, environmental management and certification, as well as waste management. Payments to others who carry out these measures are also included.
