Environmental protection expenditure 2016:

Continued increase in environmental protection expenditure for 2016

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2017-10-12 9.30

Swedish industry’s total environmental protection expenditure amounted to SEK 13.9 billion during 2016, which was an increase by 10 per cent from 2015. The highest total expenditure on environmental protection was seen in the electricity, gas and heating plant industry.

Environmental protection refers to activities aimed to prevent, reduce or eliminate pollution or other deterioration of the environment. Environmental protection expenditure is divided into industry classification, type of expenditure (investment and current expenditure) and environmental domain.

The highest total expenditure for environmental protection in 2016 was seen in the electricity, gas and heating plant industry with 2.7 billion. The industry contributed with 20 per cent of the total environmental protection expenses. Since 2015 the industry increased its environmental protection expenditure by 3 per cent.

Environmental protection investments contributed with 37 per cent of the total environmental protection expenditure while current expenditure (e.g. maintenance, management and fees) contributed with 63 per cent. The current expenditure amounted to 8.7 billion in 2016 while investment amounted to 5.2 billion.

Highest investments for ambient air and climate protection

In 2016, Swedish industries ( mining, quarrying, manufacturing and electricity, gas and water supply) primarily invested in environmental protection devoted to protection of ambient air and the climate. Such investments include installation of filters and measures to replace fossil fuel sources with fuel sources that have a reduced climate impact.

Investments to reduce the environmental impact in the domain water accounted for about 28 per cent of the total environmental protection investments while investments to reduce and manage waste accounted for 16 per cent. Since 2015, investments in the domains biodiversity, land and other environmental protection increased by 1.1 billion and accounted for 21 per cent of the total environmental protection investments in 2016*.

Definitions and explanations

Environmental protection refers to activities that aim to prevent, reduce or eliminate pollution or other deterioration of the environment. Eurostat, the EU statistical organization, has produced common international definitions for environmental protection and how the expenditure is to be calculated.

Investments in environmental protection are broken down into investments for emissions treatment that do not affect the process (e.g. filters and separate purification plants), and investments for the prevention of emissions involving investments in new or changed production processes. Current expenditure consist of expenditure for staff, energy, materials and supplies, such as for the operation and supervision of purification plants, for environmental administration tasks, environmental management and certification, as well as waste management. Payments to others who carry out these measures are also included.
