Sharp drop in fund wealth

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority 2020-05-26 9.30

Total fund wealth amounted to SEK 4 077 billion at the end of March 2020. This is a decrease of SEK 709 billion compared with the previous quarter and is the largest decline ever noted between two quarters.

A brief description of developments in the first quarter:

  • Net sales amounted to SEK 56 billion, which was the highest figure since beginning of the production of these statistics.
  • The households sector noted the largest net sales, amounting to SEK 29 billion.
  • Swedish financial enterprises was the sector in which fund wealth decreased the most, by SEK 505 billion, in which premium pension decreased by SEK 219 billion.
  • Foreign owners’ holdings decreased by SEK 17 billion in the first quarter.
  • Bond and money market funds was the only fund category in which value increased, by SEK 36 billion. This can be explained by large net investments of SEK 40 billion and because they are less volatile than, for example, equity funds.
  • Equity funds was the fund category that decreased the most, by SEK 540 billion, in the first quarter, as a result of the sharp decline in the stock market and negative net investments amounting to SEK 59 billion.
  • The second largest decrease, SEK 81 billion, was in mixed funds, followed by SEK 77 billion in fund-of-funds.
  • Households’ directly-owned fund wealth amounted to SEK 736 billion in the first quarter of 2020, which is SEK 140 billion less than in the previous quarter and SEK 50 billion less than in the first quarter of 2019.
  • In the households sector, the largest outflow was noted in equity funds, SEK 16 billion net, and the smaller outflow was in bond and money market funds, just under SEK 1 billion.
  • In terms of total fund wealth in the households sector, the equity funds category remains unequivocally the largest category, with SEK 359 billion, followed by SEK 135 billion in fund-in-funds.

Only minor changes in the exchange rate for the Swedish krona

The average exchange rate for one euro was SEK 10.66 in the first quarter of 2020, which is unchanged compared with the fourth quarter of 2019. The Swedish krona was weakened against the US dollar, with an average exchange rate of SEK 9.67, compared with SEK 9.63 in the previous quarter.

Investments in foreign currency are affected by the development of the exchange rate, and a weaker krona increases the value of these holdings when converted to Swedish kronor. The development of the Swedish krona against the US dollar during the fourth quarter has contributed to the increase in value of investments in US dollars.

Number of active funds in the statistics

There were 749 active funds in the first quarter, which is six funds more than in the previous quarter.
