Fund wealth decreased

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority 2019-02-21 9.30

At the end of December 2018, total fund wealth amounted to SEK 3 797 billion, down by SEK 310 billion compared with the previous quarter. Households’ directly-owned fund wealth contributed SEK 80 billion to the decrease in total fund wealth in Swedish-registered investment funds.

A breakdown by sector shows that fund wealth decreased mainly among Swedish financial corporations, by SEK 212 billion, followed by households’ directly owned fund wealth, by SEK 80 billion. Net investment by Swedish financial corporations amounted to SEK 5 billion, while net investment by households was minus SEK 10 billion. The financial sector includes unit-linked funds, premium pension savings and holdings by financial corporations that may have households as final owners.

Foreign ownership decreased by SEK 25 billion, despite SEK 4 billion in net investment.

Among the various fund types, equity funds decreased the most in the fourth quarter of 2018, by SEK 286 billion, followed by other funds, which decreased by SEK 41 billion. Fund wealth in bond and money market funds increased by SEK 37 billion. Net investment contributed SEK 21 billion to this increase.

Households’ investments in funds

Households’ fund wealth amounted to SEK 707 billion in the fourth quarter of 2018, which is SEK 80 billion less than in the previous quarter and SEK 20 billion less than in the fourth quarter in 2017. Households invested most in fund-of-funds, SEK 2 billion net, and the least in equity funds, minus SEK 9 billion.

Exchange rate development

The average exchange rate for one euro was SEK 10.32 in the fourth quarter of 2018, compared with SEK 10.41 in the third quarter of 2018. The Swedish krona was weakened against the US dollar, with an average exchange rate of SEK 9.04, compared with SEK 8.95 in the previous quarter.

Investments in foreign currency may be affected by the development of the exchange rate. The development of the Swedish krona against the euro has contributed to a decrease in the value of investments. Investments in US dollars were affected favourably during the quarter, as the Swedish krona was weakened against the US dollar.

Number of active funds

Some funds have been closed and new funds have been opened in the fourth quarter of 2018. There were 776 active funds during the quarter.

These statistics cover Swedish-registered investment funds. Both mutual funds (investment funds) and special funds are included in the statistics. The category ‘Other funds’ includes funds that could not be classified under any other category, such as hedge funds.
